Many of our students locally travel to school on foot. This not only provides some valuable exercise and fresh air, but also offers many mental health and social benefits such as reducing stress and anxiety. Regular exercise will not only improve your child’s fitness, but also energise their waking hours and aid better sleep at night.
Walking, cycling or using public transport where possible will not only minimise your household expenditure, but also reduce our carbon footprint and lessen our environmental impact.
Students are able to use our bike shelter to secure their bicycles during the school day. This is locked at 8.40am and unlocked again at 2.55pm. Bicycles remain the responsibility of the owner, as the shelter is not within the school boundary fencing, it is located within the top car park.
All students must wear a helmet to travel to and from school and use front and rear bicycle lights during the darker months for their own safety. Please ensure that riders wear appropriate waterproof layers and are visible to drivers during wet weather.
To authorise your child’s use of their bicycle to travel to and from school (and use of the shelter), please read and complete this form and return it to reception either in person or by email to info@heanorgatespencer.org.uk.

Littles Travel operates our school bus service from Ilkeston to school and back at the end of the day from outside the hall at 3.10pm. Each one-way journey costs £1.50.

A popular alternative route is via the Trent Barton no 34 service originating from Eastwood and Ilkeston. Please see their website for up to date fare and timetable information.
Many of our students also use the Trent Barton H1 service between school and Heanor, operating every 12 minutes. Students are also able to travel from Oakwood or any point along the A608 using this service. Please see their website for up to date fare and timetable information.

Trent Barton and Derbyshire County Council both have schemes to support with travel costs
You have the option to make an application to Derbyshire County Council for assistance with costs for your child travelling to and from school by bus. Please see their website for more information on criteria and to make an application.

We offer designated parking spaces for blue-badge holders. There are 2 allocated spaces on the main drive at the end closest to reception, 4 in the main car park and 1 immediately outside reception. Please refrain from parking in these bays if you are not disabled or facing mobility challenges, to ensure that they are available for those who need them most.
Our local childrens’ play centre Dinky Dinos have kindly authorised us to use their car park as overflow parking after 3pm daily, or during our after school events.
There are usually ad hoc spaces available to park in on the Heanor Gate Industrial Estate off the main road (A608).
We respectfully ask that drivers refrain from parking on Kirkley Drive as this causes the residents frustration and makes the area congested at peak times, particularly when students are leaving the school site.
